Sometimes you just want to shed a bit more light on the darker rooms of your house without having to rely just on harsh, unnatural electric lighting. However, if they don’t have an exterior wall, you can’t install a normal window. That’s where Velux Sun Tunnels come in.Â
They are holes delved into a roof, then fitted with domed or flat windows to protect against water. The sun tunnel has an acrylic dome that will focus light into a spot.
Afterwards the tunnel is made. This tunnel is a tube with a mirrored inside. This mirror reflects the light focused by the acrylic dome downwards till it reaches its destination at the bottom. Two kinds of tunnel are available, rigid tunnels that go straight down and flexible tunnels that can be curved at points while still providing light throughout.Â
The result is a roof window that will carry light down multiple floors if necessary towards its destination.Â
Installation Benefits
Unlike most other kinds of roof windows, Sun Tunnels can be installed on both flat roofs and pitched roofs. The Velux TCF is designed for flat roofs and has a domed window, while the Velux TWF, TLF and TWR are flat and designed for pitched roofs.Â
Health Benefits
Natural lighting has a variety of edges over electrical lighting since it’s much stronger and much brighter. For instance, it helps the human body develop vitamin D. It also helps regulate the sleep cycle. This means that getting some sunlight into your house can hugely impact your day-to-day life.Â
Cost Benefits
Bringing in natural light into areas of your house that you normally couldn’t access with windows means you drastically cut down on lighting expenditure in those rooms. With energy bills spiking at time of writing, there’s no better time to invest in electricity-free lighting.
