How to Clean a Hedgehog Gutter Brush

A hedgehog gutter brush is a handy improvement to the gutter that helps keep leaves and other debris away. However, after a while these brushes can become clogged themselves with seeds and dirt. If you want to get the best performance out of your hedgehog gutter brushes you need to have them cleaned every 12-18 months. If you are not confident on a ladder you can have this done by a professional.

However, if you are confident, you can do this yourself.

You will need:

  • Safety gloves
  • Safety Ladder
  • Hose
  • Work clothes/clothes you don’t mind getting absolutely filthy
  • Large plastic cleanable tarpaulin
  • Scrubbing brush
  • A compost heap or some other place you can dispose of a lot of dirt and muck

How to Clean a Hedgehog Gutter Brush

When you go up the ladder, the first thing you need to do is remove the gutter brush clips. These keep the gutter brush secured. As soon as you have freed a 4-metre length of gutter brush, you can just pull it out and gently toss it to the ground below. Make sure not to lose any of the clips.

Once you have removed all the gutter brush pieces, you should gather them up on the tarpaulin. Now you can begin to hose them all down. Make sure you’re wearing clothes that you are fine with getting dirty because this process is going to cover you in muck. Try to make sure as much dirt as possible stays on the tarpaulin so it is easier to move.

After this, you need to investigate the brushes. After the dirt has been removed, if they have moss or any other plant growing in them you need to remove it. Scrub it out vigorously with your brush till it is clear of any plant matter.

Now you need to dispose of the dirt. Very carefully bring the tarp to where you want to dump the dirt and use a little bit of water to make sure that the tarp is clean afterward. You can change clothes at this point, but be careful not to track mud or muck into your house.

Now you should just go back up on the ladder, again, carefully and after drying to make sure you don’t slip. Reinstall all the gutter brushes back in place with the clips. Your job is done, time for a cup of tea. Probably a hot bath, too.
