Choosing the Right Dry Verge
A dry fix verge system provides a mechanically fixed, mortar-free finish along the gable edge of a pitched roof. Individual units cover and secure the ends of suitable roof tiles while creating a neat, consistent roofline.
The correct product depends on the roof covering, tile profile and system being installed. Always check compatibility before ordering.
Universal or Left and Right-Handed Units?
Some systems use separate units for the left and right sides of the roof. Others use a universal design that can be fitted on either verge.
Universal units can simplify ordering because the same component can be used on both sides. However, this does not mean that every universal product is compatible with every roof tile.
Check the manufacturer’s tile compatibility, batten gauge and roof pitch requirements for the individual system.
Will Dry Verge Fit My Roof Tiles?
Compatibility is one of the most important checks to make before buying.
Different systems are designed around particular tile profiles and installation requirements. Even products described as universal can have limitations.
Before ordering, check:
- Roof tile type and profile
- Batten gauge
- Roof pitch
- Left, right or universal fitting
- Verge construction
- Manufacturer compatibility
- Required starter and finishing components
If you know the manufacturer and profile of your roof tile, use this information when checking the product specification.
What Components Do I Need?
Individual verge units form the main run along the gable, but additional components may be required to start and finish the installation correctly.
Depending on the chosen system, these can include:
Starter or eaves units – used to secure and finish the system at the bottom of the verge.
Ridge end caps – provide a finished detail where the verge meets the ridge.
Angled or half-round end caps – available to suit different ridge tile profiles.
Use compatible components from the same system wherever required by the manufacturer.
Dry Verge vs Mortar Verge
A traditional wet verge uses mortar as part of the roof-edge detail. A dry system uses mechanical components instead of relying on mortar to secure the verge.
This avoids problems associated with cracked or deteriorating mortar and provides a consistent finished appearance.
Correct installation remains important. The units must be compatible with the roof covering and fixed in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
Dry Fix Roofing Standards
BS 8612 sets performance requirements for dry-fixed ridge, hip and verge systems used with slating and tiling.
Products may also be designed to provide mechanical fixing in accordance with relevant BS 5534 requirements.
Check the technical information for the individual system if a particular standard or certification is required for your project rather than assuming every product has the same approvals.
Colours and Pack Sizes
eRoofing stocks options in popular roofline colours including black, grey, brown and terracotta.
Individual units are useful for smaller jobs or replacement work, while larger boxes and bulk quantities can offer a convenient option for complete roofs and trade projects.
Remember to include any compatible starter units and end caps required to complete the installation.
What Should I Check Before Ordering?
Before buying, confirm:
- Tile manufacturer and profile
- System compatibility
- Roof pitch
- Batten spacing
- Left/right or universal design
- Required colour
- Number of units
- Starter and finishing components
- Manufacturer’s installation instructions
Checking the tile compatibility first is the best way to avoid ordering the wrong system.
