Uses
The Black Jack Bitumen Roof Felt Adhesive by Everbuild is a cold-applied high-performance roof-felt adhesive. The cold-application formula means that the adhesive can be applied directly to the surface, making it more straightforward for novice D.I.Yers. Besides roofing felt, this product is compatible with and adheres well to other substrates, including concrete, asphalt, wood, metal and similar surfaces.
Preparation
Ensure that the surface is prepared correctly to achieve optimal results. Start by removing all contaminants that could interfere with the adhesion, including dirt, dust, grease, oil, etc. Any organic growth present should be removed using a dedicated mould remover, ensuring all spores are eliminated. Porous surfaces may need to be primed with a coat of Bitumen Primer, and left to dry before proceeding.
Application
BS 8217:1194 is the British Standard for installing felt to a roof correctly; following these guidelines will optimise results.
- Apply the Bitumen Roof Felt Adhesive to the surface using a brush or mop and allow it to be left "open" for 15 - 30 minutes to develop its full tackiness.
- The felt should be placed into the wet adhesive carefully, rubbing or rolling each section down to ensure maximum contact, ensuring all air has been excluded.
- You should maintain pressure on the felt until it is fully adhered to the surfaced, using a lighter roller that can apply approximately 25kg of pressure.
Limitations and Notes
- Do not apply to areas where contact with solvents is likely
- Avoid inhaling any vapours in confined spaces
- On timber roof structures, you should follow BS 8217:1994 to nail down the first layer of felt, the second and third layers may be bonded with Bitumen Roof Felt Adhesive
