How to Use Solar Reflective Paint

Every day, during daylight hours, your roof undergoes constant bombardment from the sun itself. This takes the form of ultraviolet radiation, or UV rays. On human flesh they will cause tanning and burns. Their effect on roof materials can also be dangerous.

Plastics can eventually melt under UV rays. Metals can become superheated as they absorb light directly – we’ve all had bad experiences with a boiling car dashboard, now imagine metal in an uninterrupted view of the sun. It can affect bituminous waterproofing as well, normally one of the most reliable waterproofing materials.

However, there’s no reason to worry. Everbuild’s Black Jack Solar Reflective Paint can protect against UV rays, bouncing them back into the sky. This can help protect metal and other materials.

Note that if you are uncomfortable working on a roof and on a ladder, you may want to leave this job to trusted professionals. Some applications might not involve working at elevation, however. In addition, this paint cannot be used on expanded polystyrene, or in areas where they may be later exposed to solvents.

You will need:

  • Safety goggles and gloves
  • Soft bristle brushes or a mohair roller
  • White Spirit
  • Everbuild Black Jack Solar Reflective Paint
  • Cleaning cloth

You can only start the process on bituminous layers if it has properly dried. This will take six hours for pour and roll, torch on, or other hot applied bitumen. If it is a solvent mix it will take three days, and two weeks for water-based bitumen.

Stir up the paint. You will need to do this every so often. Apply the paint in a thin, even coat to an area. Wait for two hours, then apply another thin coat. During both coats, make sure to only apply light pressure.

Afterwards, carefully use white spirit to wash paint off of the brushes and/or roller.
