Skylights are windows on roofs that point upwards. They allow you to get fresh air into your highest rooms. However, they also carry with them an obvious risk. If rain enters through them, it can potentially be serious. Whereas condensation and mould are long term threats, open rain can damage furniture and electronics quite quickly. Â
That might make someone think twice about skylights; but Velux have been making windows for 80 years, so they know how to make ones that are totally watertight. The VELUX CFP for instance uses a combination of glass, PVC and polycarbonate to create a fixed flat roof skylight that is waterproof as well as extremely resistant to physical damage. In addition, like many other Velux windows, it can be bought with a securing kit. The ZZZ 210 securing kit allows for the joint between the roof and the frame to be further reinforced.
The VELUX Centre-Pivot GGL is also totally waterproof, this time relying on a laminated pinewood frame that is coated in acrylic paint or lacquer for additional protection. Other parts of the frame are made of aluminium, copper and zinc, all highly water resistant metals. Some models like the 66, 62, and 67 even come with anti-dew coating so water won’t even affect your view outside. There are three types of flashings available for single, double and multiple sets of windows that will make sure no seams exist for water to penetrate.
Do Velux Windows Let Rain in When Open?
But no flashing can protect your roof for when the windows are left open by negligence or happenstance during heavy rain. That’s where the VELUX Integra windows comes in. These windows have a specially designed gold coated electric rain sensor. The sensor is part of a circuit; when it becomes wet from rain the circuit will be completed. This will begin a process that makes the window automatically close.
