How to Fix a Gutter Stop End or a Stop End Outlet

A gutter takes the water that slides down a roof and carries it to a grate where it can be safely disposed of. However, one of the more common areas that can be damaged is the stop end – this is the part of the gutter that seals off the end of the gutter. Fortunately, with replacement parts and the application of some gutter sealant, you can have your stop end fixed in no time.

This project requires the use of a ladder. If you are uncomfortable working at elevation, please instead hire trusted professionals to complete this task instead.

You will need:

  • Safety gloves and goggles
  • A ladder
  • An appropriate gutter Stop End
  • An appropriate gutter Stop End outlet (if your stop end outlet itself has been damaged)
  • Roof and gutter sealant, and a sealant gun (not needed for a stop end outlet)
  • Cleaning cloth or Wonder Wipes

The FloPlast guttering ranges we offer at ERoofing are push fit so you may notice you do not require any kind of fixing, you simply push them into position.

There are two types of stop end – the external and the internal stop end. The external stop end seals off a bit of standard guttering, while the internal can turn an ordinary outlet into a stop end outlet. There are also custom made stop end outlets that are made of a single piece. You will also need to make sure that the stop end or outlet is the right profile.

Fixing Process

Remove the damaged stop end. If there is dirt or grime around that part of the guttering, clean it with a cleaning cloth or Wonder Wipe. Get the new stop end, and apply a thin bead of gutter sealant to the edge before pushing it into place. Afterwards, apply another thin bead along the inner seam and smooth it down with your fingers while wearing gloves.

If it’s an outlet, remove the damaged outlet and clip. Clean the guttering it fits into as well. Take the new outlet and clip, and detach the clip. Insert the guttering into the outlet, and then attach the clip over both. Now you just need to slot the outlet into the downpipe, and you’re all done.
